Essential DRIVING Skills

Driving safely in California requires more than knowing how to operate a vehicle. Drivers need to understand traffic laws, recognize hazards, and make safe decisions in changing road conditions.

Know the Right-of-Way

Understanding who has the right-of-way is essential at stop signs, intersections, crosswalks, traffic signals, and roundabouts. Even when you have the right-of-way, always stay alert and make sure it is safe to proceed.

Check Before Changing Lanes

Before changing lanes:

Mirror → Signal → Blind Spot → Move

Check your mirrors, use your turn signal, check your blind spot, and move only when it is safe. Driver-assistance technology can help, but it should not replace visual checks.

Maintain a Safe Following Distance

Leave enough space between your vehicle and the car ahead so you have time to react if traffic suddenly slows or stops. Increase your following distance when conditions are difficult.

Scan Your Surroundings

Good drivers look beyond the vehicle directly in front of them. Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, turning vehicles, road construction, and changing traffic conditions.

Adjust Your Speed

Safe driving means more than following the posted speed limit. Adjust your speed based on traffic, weather, visibility, road conditions, and other hazards.

Avoid Distractions

Keep your attention on driving. Avoid texting, unnecessary phone use, eating, or other activities that take your attention away from the road.

Practice Essential Driving Skills

New drivers should regularly practice:

  • Turns and lane changes

  • Intersections and right-of-way

  • Parking and backing

  • Safe following distance

  • Highway and city driving

  • Hazard awareness

  • Smooth braking and acceleration

Keep Learning

Passing the DMV test is only the beginning. Good driving habits develop through practice, experience, and continued awareness.

California driving laws and DMV requirements can change, so always refer to the current California Driver’s Handbook for the latest information.

The goal isn't just to pass the driving test—it’s to develop safe, confident driving skills that last a lifetime.
